Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has just listed 23 plants, animals and ecological communities as threatened, endangered or critically endangered.
Over half of these species and communities were affected by the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires. Without urgent action, we could lose them forever.
We all know that the previous Government ignored difficult problems. They just accepted the decline and destruction of our environment.
And they dismissed the extinction of our precious native plants and animals as inevitable. But the Albanese Labor Government is committed to taking strong and decisive action when it is needed.
Instead of accepting environmental decline as inevitable, or putting it in the too-hard basket, we’re doing everything we can to turn things around.
That’s why we’ve released our Threatened Species Action Plan called Towards Zero Extinctions.
The plan sets out strong targets for threatened species conservation and recovery over the next 10 years. It will guide our actions and priorities.
These are the strongest targets we’ve ever seen – including preventing any new extinctions and protecting and conserving at least 30% of Australia’s land mass.
It takes advice from researchers and experts and identifies 20 priority places and 110 priority species to help guide recovery and action.
